short version: Fauci was asked why masks were downplayed and he said the experts wanted to avoid panic buying of PPE. Trump spread the lie, the Democrats spread the lie, and the media spread the lie. Then the people who spread the lie blamed Trump.

Dude, it's the Trump administration. Of course they should take the blame.

I heard pro-mask views from February.

They are both liars, but this lie wasn't their invention. Fauci admitted on tape he and the medical community in charge of advising the politicians and bureaucrats downplayed the virus and masks to avoid a run on PPE. He admitted it on tape!!!

I remember watching one talking head after another downplaying the bug and masks. It was a concerted effort that almost nobody would have joined if it was Trump's idea and in conflict with the medical experts.

And Fauci admitted playing with herd immunity estimates based on opinion polls, he started out claiming 60-70% and bumped it up to around 75-90+%. Its a small lie that probably didn't play much of a role in our lives but thats twice he lied for the greater good. His first lie helped spread covid.

The country would have been better off if they told us the truth, people would have found ways to make masks. But it also means blaming Trump for it all is dangerous, he was told what to do and he did it. What would Biden do if Fauci et al told him to downplay the virus and masks to avoid a run on PPE? We know what his party did, they downplayed the virus and masks and Joe criticized travel restrictions.

I think it was Jackson Browne who got covid at a NYC concert around Mar 12, Gov Cuomo (and some other governors) sent sick people back into nursing homes in late March and into April. Who told them to do that? Blame it all on Trump and a lot of complicit people will skate. It was mid March when Fauci told Trump the situation was worse and the response was ramped up.

As for when the virus arrived, I think it was late 2019. I know 2 people who think they got it judging by the symptoms in December. Current estimate for its appearance is last fall maybe even into October. I also think the estimate of 48 cases in late February is drastically understating the situation. That may have been the number of people hospitalized but there had to be thousands of people infected. It was the expansion of the bug in this early stage that set us up for what happened later and our medical experts were telling us not to worry.

Nice job totally ignoring Trump's documented insider knowledge, shown to the world on tape with his Bob Woodward interviews. Nice job totally ignoring the absolute sh1tshow of PPE shortfalls and feet-dragging on ramping up supplies and imports - again, all Team Trump. BTW, the 48 total on 2/24 is positive tests by that date; obviously we have no way of knowing the reality when testing was in its infancy. Similarly, today's 250,000 new cases daily is also an understatement, since not everyone gets tested.

      JRabbit is wrong.

Community transmission of COVID-19 was first detected in the United States in February 2020. By mid-March, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, New York City, and four U.S. territories had reported cases of COVID-19.Apr 17, 2020

To suggest that there was equivalence between Fauci downplaying masks for a month when masks were scarce and Trump downplaying masks for most of a year, during most of which masks were not scarce, seems fundamentally dishonest and possibly more dishonest then Fauci's downplaying of masks.

Trump claimed the virus would magically go away, be cured by warm weather, or bleach and UV, etc. No-one else was doing that.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Yes, he was told to downplay the virus to avoid panic buying of PPE. I saw many talking heads doing that, covid was like the flu yada yada, dont bother with masks blah blah blah

He was told to downplay or he chose to? Have you ever known Trump to do what he's told (beyond the odd time he gives some quick lip service that he then disparages and reverts to his original choice shortly thereafter)?

He was told to, Fauci said so. Trump doesn't know about this stuff, he has an obvious pro-business anti-lockdown bias so I doubt he disagreed with the lie. Or maybe he did and went along with it anyway, I'm sure quite a few people in on the lie weren't all too comfortable about it.

I made no equivalence, I hold Fauci and his medical buddies more accountable than Trump, the Dems, and the media. They are the experts, Trump et al just did what they told them to do.

Again, totally ignoring the Woodward evidence, which dates back to January.

Like ANYBODY could tell Trump what to do...
      Let's see...
Trump made a lame attempt to tell people to wear masks, but then went on and never enforced wearing masks at White House Events or his super rallies, while also making fun of people that wore masks...
Trump cut back on needed testing because he didn't want the numbers to look as bad...
Trump continued to say it was just going to go away (since February), down playing the danger while more and more people got sick and died because they believed him.
Trump continued to put his reelection chances first vs. trying to do anything about the pandemic.
Kept touting "cures" that didn't work...
Put no national plan in place (I don't want to hear about how it was all the governors faults, because the republican govs were following his do nothing lead) Just take a look at what Biden is doing. He is TRYING to do SOMETHING, while Trump did nothing.
And as the final insult, his team NEVER even put a vaccine plan in place once the vaccine was available. He was too busy whining about how HE WON THE ELECTION.
He continued to put his needs ahead of the American People. While not all the fault falls in his lap, his actions (or inaction) led to far more American Deaths. He didn't do jack **** while Americans Died!

Fauci told him to downplay the bug and he did, Fauci told lots of people to downplay the bug and they did.

and by Fauci, I mean Fauci and his medical colleagues responsible for the consensus decision to downplay the bug.

One year ago Canada's health minister and the chief medical officer both hedged on whether facemasks were necessary and whether we were heading into a health emergency. That was the beginning of last year (2020). At that point one Canadian had been hospitalized with what was suspected to be COVID-19.
Did Dr. Fauci tell Trump masks were useless 6 months ago? Did Fauci tell Trump 100,000 deaths should be downplayed? Please provide the dated quotes, Berzerker.
Over 200,000 Americans had already died when Trump, released from the hospital after experimental treatment for his COVID-19, took off his mask on the steps of the White House, and the next day told Americans 'Do not be afraid of COVID.' Please, blame that on Fauci, but source your quotes.
Or are you saying Trump is so incredibly stupid that if he understands something once, that will be the only thing he will understand on that topic. (eg. Don't rent to black people in the '70s = support racist (populist?) groups in the 2020s.)

I really think you've got that backwards, Berz. The medical team was instructed to back Trump's insistence on downplaying the virus.

Long after Fauci started saying how serious this was, Trump didn't change his tune.
Fauci didn't tell him to say it was going away soon, starting in February and repeated constantly until November by Trump.
Fauci didn't tell him to make fun of people for wearing masks
Fauci did tell him that social distancing and mask wearing was important, and Trump either paid lip service to him or ignored him
Fauci didn't tell him that it was OK for him to hold super spreader rallies and WH events
Fauci wanted a Federal Vaccine distribution plan put in place, Trump did nothing.
Fauci wanted more testing and Trump didn't because the numbers would make him look bad
        And the list goes on...
But feel free to say that Fauci was the problem, but the rest of us know who caused the most problems.
