the '84 movie was okay, I liked the music though (Toto)

I totally agreee ...
the Intro was epic ... first Princess Irulan telling us about the Politics of the Great Houses ... and then the title music by Toto
Even nowadays I occasionally watch it ... likewise the Intro of Deep Space 9 and that of the first Battlestar Galactica seriesLast edited by Proteus_MST; September 20, 2021, 17:49.

I definitely liked it.
Much closer to the book than Dune 1984
while still being as epic as the 1984 version.
On the other hand it also was very similar in its settings to the 1984 version ...
when you saw the beginning of a scene you could already foretell which scene would come next
(example: The landing field on Caladan in rain ... it was clear that now we would see the test of Pauls humanity)
A few things from Dune 1984 I missed ...
for example the hyperjump of the guild ship.
I found it very beatiful in Dune 1984 ... the ship being in orbit around Caladan ...
then the navigator doing its thing and suddenly the jump ship vanishing and reappearing in orbit around Dune
Pity that Villeneuve didn't a similar scene
Most likely I will go and watch the movie a second time (with another friend) some time during the next few weeksTamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "He has fallen in battle and I must take him to the Einherjar in Valhalla"

Easily the best Dune adaption on film, even if it's pt. I only. The only word IMO that describes the style, the combi of visuals and sounds is "truly epic". (edit: ok these are two words/silly me)
The acting for Paul and his mother stands out IMO (admittedly they are also the key characters here getting most of the time). Brolin does good as Gurney, while Momoa's Duncan is more or less like Aquaman, just in the desert, still pretty cool
I could see that people who don't know the book and are more used to recent StarWars or Marvel blockbusters could find it too heavy, or boring at times.
The action here is similarly spectacular but the movie also often takes its time (which I like), skips almost any lighter tones (if there were any in the books to begin with, hehe) and adds in comments about ecology or colonialism without being too preachy.
Loved it overallLast edited by BeBMan; September 28, 2021, 09:22.Blah

Looks like it's running well so far. Not super-duper-well, but despite covid it's over its own budget already after weeks in Europe, while it just started in the US, China, and other locs. Afaik for being really profitable these movies have to go way beyond the money spend on making them as there are lotsa additional costs. Or somesuch.
So there's hope for a sequel.Blah

Lets hope so ... after all the movie covers less of the story than the 1980s movie by Dino de Laurentiis.
On another note ... here is Denis Villeneuve talking about the scene with the box of pain and the Gomn Jabbar:
You definitely get the feeling that making Dune definitely isn't just a job for Villeneuve, but rather a project that is very close to Villeneuves heart
He read Dune (the book) already at the age of 14 ... sounds like he is a geek, like lots of us (myself inclucded)Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."
