The point is that Trump told Comey to make a public statement saying that the dossier was fake and he refused.

Comey (or his crew) used the dossier to get the fisa warrant to spy on Trump. Publicly admitting the dossier was unreliable would have informed the judge the warrant they issued was applied for using politically motivated fabrications.

You're missing an important point. They investigated the Trump campaign for collusion with unverified information that HRC started the rumor. So this should have been investigated.
