  • FB Bad Guy

Why is it that you are the bad guy when you call out someone on FB for sharing/posting fake news? I'm not talking about disagreeing with someone's opinion, I'm talking about when it a blatant falsehood that would be so easy to check before sharing it.

Because that's not what people use Facebook for. That's why I just post the occasional joke.

The point of sharing on fb is to have your pov affirmed, not challenged. When you correct them, you're shaming them in front of a broad cross-section of real-life friends and relations whose opinions matter in some respect. Here, hey, whatever, I've only ever met like one current member in person, and the community is dedicated to that kind of interaction.

The thing that I usually try to call out is the use of old stories, presented as new. I just post the original date of publication with link ("This story is from May 2018. Old news.") Just one post; no further engagement.

You are definitely not the bad guy for pointing out obvious fake statements. Keep it up.

Most people are used to being in an echo chamber where they rarely if ever encounter a differing view point. Being challenged and forced to think logically is this unfamiliar to them and scares them.

Firstly, I am not on Facebook. secondly, I read an interesting snippet the other day about algorithms selecting items that may interest you. An unintended consequence of those algorithms is to create something akin to your own personalised echo chamber. The article I read was about how a muslim girl may have become radicalised to the point she plotted an actual attack. Perusal of her Youtube algorithms had the terrorism researcher wondering if Youtube algorithms contributed, in part, by selecting islamic propaganda for her viewing pleasure.

I think there is some merit in the suggestion that algorithms help create a sort of echo chamber.

YouTube always suggests stupid stuff I'm not interested in, or that I rewatch things even though I said not interested on 10000 other videos I had already watched. I can see how it may lead some to have violent thoughts.

So in my case the echo chamber is just an unending repeating of "Not interested"
