Homemade booby trap in Maine kills man who rigged it to protect residence
A Maine man who rigged his home with booby traps to thwart intruders has been killed after tripping one of his own devices.
Van Buren police said they were called to Ronald Cyr’s home on Thanksgiving Day in the early evening after he called 911 to report he had been shot.

“Regretfully, Mr. Cyr succumbed to the injuries he sustained from the gunshot,” police said in a news release.
Police said officers on the scene then found the front door had been booby-trapped with a device designed to fire a handgun should anyone attempt to enter through the door.

Other unknown devices were also discovered, causing alarmed investigators to contact the Maine State Police Bomb Squad, police said.
After an extensive investigation, it was determined Cyr has been shot as the result of the unintentional discharge of one of his homemade devices, they said.

While she didn't die, some girl in Arizona out late partying tried to get into her house by going down the chimney and got stuck.
She was thinner than Santa. They pulled her out after about an hour.

Nothing will ever beat rocket man. He was jealous about his girlfriend talking to other people so he put a jet engine in the back of his old P.O.S. **** Chevy. The rest was Darwin Awards history.

couple of kids used an m80 or cherry bomb or some firework to blow up a beehive in a tree in the backyard

they lit the fuse and ran inside the house to watch the exlposion

it blew out the window and one of the kids was stung to death

You've been driving for a long time.

Also, 60% of gun deaths are suicide. That is a problem that transcends gun violence.

Many make the ranks of Darwin winners through the use of a gun.

Rarely deadly, but there's also lots of fun with phones:

                              (...)

A study by experts in the US has found that since the advent of smartphones, injuries linked to mobile phones have shot up, both indirect injuries – such as those sustained texting while walking – and those caused by the devices themselves, such as the phone hitting someone in the face or the battery exploding.

With some of these injuries posing the risk of long-term complications, the authors of the new research say users should be more aware of the dangers of using their devices while attempting other activities, while there also needs to be better education about how to prevent injuries from the phones themselves.

“Nobody in their right mind would ever read a book while they are walking, why would they read an entire article on the phone while they are walking?” said Boris Paskhover, chief of facial plastics and reconstructive surgery at Rutgers New Jersey medical school and co-author of the study. But he added: “Everyone does it, everyone. I do it.”

Various approaches have been trialled to keep users safe: in Chongqing, China, a stretch of pavement was opened especially for people who use their phones while walking, while in Salzburg airbags have been put on lampposts to raise awareness of the dangers of being distracted by one’s phone.

                              (...)
Hehe re airbag idea. Couple weeks ago I had someone texting on a bicycle, steering it directly towards me without paying any attention to the way or the wider universe around him. When he closed in I called him loudly, then he took notice and changed course.

In hindsight I think I should have sued for a few gazillions over the trauma or so
