  • Would you regularly eat meat analogue?

...so vegan meat..or whatever it's called where you ....eat.

That's kinda inspired by the tree threads.

I never tried anything like that. I do eat real meat and for now can't really imagine to quit it completely. I do not eat it in large quantities tho.

However I guess the argument pro all of these "fake" or "replacement"/whatever thingies is a) environment b) health c) maybe more affordable where meat is expensive, if this reaches the mass market?

Otoh, unless I completely misunderstand it, much of the debate seems to be business driven also, so it's more about cheap to produce industry-food?

Long story short, do you care about this, would you regulary eat it, under what circumstances?

    - if it tastes like meat
    - if its cheap and taste good somehow, regardless if meat-like or not
    - to save the world
    - nevar! gimme dead beast
    - I don't eat meat anyway
    - Soylent Green is PEOPLE!

    etc.

    I would and I have.

Other than a couple times early on, I haven’t had a desire for meat since changing my diet. The meat substitutes I’ve tried in restaurants have generally been underwhelming. I wouldn’t try any of them again.

There are some Filipino dishes that I eat which are could be described as meaty without any animal products. Heart of banana or cooked underripe jackfruit in coconut milk are both excellent.

Processed foods like commercial meat substitutes can be just as bad for the environment and personal health as animal products in some cases.

I am working toward a naturally home grown, plant (perennial/tree) based, whole food diet. Not yet all the way there. I’ll probably always have to take at least a B12 supplement or fortified food. Currently I have a tablespoon of nutritional yeast a day.

I don't trust xenoestrogens. Perhaps the effect is modest, but my answer is still no. Nuh-uh. Dash of soy sauce okay, consuming large wads of soy protein not so much.

I like meat too much to give it up. My sister's family is in the cattle business, and two of my nephews hunt occasionally for venison. I get a very good deal on beef. I also enjoy poultry, fish, seafood, pork and lamb.

If it tastes like meat and has a similar price to meat, I wouldn't mind making meat analogues a part of my regular diet.

I must admit, black bean burgers are pretty tasty.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

As a non-Indian almost 40 year-old vegetarian I have consumed a lot of processed meat analogues. I still consume some, and some are definitely better than we had 20-30 years ago (which in many cases could be called unique and I no longer regularly consume).

Still, my preference is to move to non-processed meat substitutes (jackfruit for example).

The best soy meat substitute is Tofu.

My understanding of the new ones is that they are often pea based. How healthy it is depends on the processing... so probably it will turn out as bad as the old soy/wheat/etc processed stuff.

                    Elok’s fears are unfounded.
Soy's isoflavones have oestrogenic properties — and have been blamed for raising the risk of breast cancer (as well as prostate cancer for men). But is this really the case?

Your mother's unfounded. I didn't say anything about cancer, I just don't want to eat plant analogues of human sex hormones because I don't know what all it does in the long term (potential results not limited to "prostate cancer"). If Asian people want to load up on that stuff, they're welcome. I'll stick to beef.

I don't eat anything because I'm not sure what will happen if I do eat something. I know exactly what will happen if I starve to death.
