Considering the fact that "Gringo" already was a well known term way before the US soldiers adapted green uniforms (they wore blue (or grey, in the southern states) during the civil war and Khaki some time thereafter), the hypothesis also gives insight into a certain lack of knowledge about history

We're not disputing that the word exists, just that your etymology is wrong.
