For the third time in five years, Alabama and Clemson will face off in the College Football Playoff National Championship game. The two powerhouse programs also met last season in the semifinal before the Crimson Tide ultimately won their fifth championship under Nick Saban.

So Monday’s season finale at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California offers Saban and co. a chance to defend their title, while Dabo Swinney and the Tigers hope to win their second championship in three years. And to those who say they’re tired or bored with part four of this duel, Kirk Herbstreit has a simple message: Beat them.

For The Win recently spoke with the ESPN College GameDay analyst about a number of topics, including the growing Alabama-Clemson rivalry, why he’s against expanding the College Football Playoff, the Goodyear Blimp’s honorary induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and, of course, Lee Corso.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. A LOT OF FANS SAY THEY’RE BORED WITH ANOTHER ALABAMA-CLEMSON PLAYOFF MATCHUP. SHOULD THEY BE?

I think it’s more envious of the teams that are winning than anything. I think they’d love their team to be there, and they’re just frustrated. I’ve always said when people say they’re tired of it, they’re tired of seeing Clemson and Alabama be dominant. I think if the truth be told, they would love to see their coaches out-recruit Alabama and Clemson and get better players and develop them and try to beat these teams.

So if you’re tired of it, then ask your coaches to raise the bar and change the narrative of these teams getting together every year for the championship.
