OK, to everyone's surprise I'm not really an expert techie.

But there is quite a debate about r e a l l y silly (if the critics can be believed) EU internet regulation in da making.

    See here: https://act1.openmedia.org/savethelink

Anybody here who knows moar about this and can tell whether this campaign has merits and whether the ideas for said regulation are bad indeed and should be stopped?

Best i can tell the regulations will make most Memes illegal as well as parodies and not to mention the music thread and the news threads here would become illegal. Simply posting the head line of a news article here would be considered an act of piracy under the proposed rules.
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!

ALso when the further regulation regarding upload filters will be instated,
the owners of forums and other social websites will have to install upload filters in order to preemptively block illegal content ...
as they will be the ones that will be held accountable.

Also meaning that website owners surely will configure the upload filters so broadly, that these will err on the side of safety,
rather blocking too much than too little

First partial success against upload filters and linktaxes:
The European Parliament has sent the copyright law back to the drawing board. All MEPs will get to vote on #uploadfilters and the #linktax September 10-13.

Yet the danger isn't over, as lobbyists (for example from the Springer publishing company) surely will put pressure on the panels in order to keep the 2nd draft as close as possible to the first one

                If you can’t compete, regulate!

Good job totally misunderstanding the aims of the regulation!

This is absurdly stupid. The link text and image is generally set by the website EXPLICITLY TO FACILITATE SHARING IT, and the website can block the bots (at least the ones that are going to care about legality) that gather the information if they want. It's suicidal to do so, but you can do it. It is a great benefit to the website to have a short teaser of their content shared around as that is free advertising. Charging services to advertise for you is stupid, because they simply will just not advertise for you and instead your competitors will get the advantage. This is even more important because search engines use those links as signals for how good your content is, and if you lose all your links you're going to lose your rankings in search engines as well. Then no one will be talking about you, and no one will be able to find you. No sane website owner would support being "protected" this way.

                        Exactly.
In general the Springer publishing company want "you" (especially google & co) to advertise their articles ...
and then pay (the Springer newspapers) for the "honour" to be able to link/advertise their articles

I am not sure if this still is the case, but IIRC the EU regulation even was about "forcing" google (and other large search engine) to display the links to said articles in their search result (i.e. not to be able to employ filters so that only articles from newspapers/media are displayed, whose companies don't want them to pay for it)

So it would be some kind of guaranteed source of income for Springer and other publishers
