So, I just learned there's yet another Ocean's Eleven sequel coming out. It's called "Ocean's Eight," and, uh, I'll just share a blurb I found on the Beeb:
There's ... something almost beautiful about the amount of stupid at work here, even leaving off who the hell "Awkwafina" is (Wiki says vulgar Asian-American rapper; am mildly disappointed as I expected a drag queen). They thought, first, that there was a lot of demand out there for more sequels to a decade-old reworking of a Frank Sinatra flick, which had two sequels already. Then they thought, "let's make it all-girl, that worked for Ghostbusters." Then, "well, what do girls like? Fashion and ****, I guess. They're women, they can't just steal money, they have to go after big shiny rocks." This is so feminist it's blowing my mind. Men break into a high-tech casino vault; women snitch jewelry off another woman who's walking around in public with them.
Does this represent desperate barrel-scraping, or was this a project a sane and sober person was excited to work on while not under the influence of alcohol? It's really hard to tell with Hollywood right now.
Anne Hathaway plays a celebutante planning to wear $150m (£113m) in jewels to the Met Gala. She might as well wear a target on her back, as all the hype around her gaudy ensemble inspires a crew of female thieves led by Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), who’s the sister of Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s previous Ocean’s films), to relieve her of them. Ocean assembles a crack team of Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina, and Sarah Paulson to pull off the heist, which, given its setting will feature many fashion world cameos including Anna Wintour and Alexander Wang.
