    What is GDPR? Giant Death Panda Robots? Will it kill Apolyton?

    Ok, so working on getting some of my sites ready for the new EU privacy laws that go into effect on May 18. I'm really not interested in paying 20 million euro fine. I would however be really interested in paying the 4% fine, as I could only do so if my total revenue was 500 million euros or more! It would totally be worth it.

    Is anyone familiar with GDPR laws and how a forum like this can be compliant? I don't think there's any chance in hell that the ads that currently run on Apolyton will be GDPR compliant. Without them Apolyton goes from losing money to losing a little bit more money. I already had to axe the babe threads and some hate speech threads (some about Arabs and homosexuals) because Google was going to flag the site because of them.

    Maybe Trump can destroy the world before I have to update all these websites, but I'm losing hope. Anyone want to buy a website? Sava ... where's all the weed money?

      If Greece and Scotland approved the GDPR, we should be able to post the type of sheep and goat pics that certain posters like...

                A little, I work with library data (loans, loaner info etc) wich we have to protect. Though I do not how it work for a forum like poly. My guess is that you have to worry about user accounts, PM's and users under the age of 16 (parental concent). Have you checked vBulletin, they might have some info.

                This doesn't make any sense. GDPR isn't about ads, babe threads or hate speech - it's about protecting personal data, which kind of personal data you may collect and how you use them.

                  Ads are very much entwined with user data. The Google/content issue is separate.

                    As long as you don't sell user information to others or let them have access to such, ads shouldn't be a problem.

                      The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) seeks to create a harmonised data protection law framework across the EU and aims to give citizens back the control of their personal data, whilst imposing strict rules on those hosting and 'processing' this data, anywhere in the world. The Regulation also introduces rules relating to the free movement of personal data within and outside the EU.

                      What this means for you:
                      Do you use cookies to track users or allow 3rd parties to use cookies to track users (like ad servers)?
                      If the answer is yes, then you should do the following:
                      1) Add a cookie to see if the user has allowed you to track them in order to use this site
                      2) Add java script to search for this cookie, if the cookie exists, proceed as normal
                      3) If the cookie does not exist, pop up a notice that asks the user to allow you to track them in order to use this site
                      4) If the user clicks yes, add the cookie and proceed as normal
                      5) If the user clicks no, do not add the cookie and either
                      6) let the user use the site anyway, but with no ad tracking (this may be complicated to do), or
                      7) redirect the user somewhere else (like www.porntube.com)

                        If the ads are based upon the page contents and have nothing to do with user data (cookies, IP addresses, etc.), then you do not have to do anything.
