    Otoh when recently watching an ep. of Star Trek Discovery I realized that the universal translator, as unrealistic as it is, is IMO way preferrable to long dialogue in Klingon (even if sub-titled). Just sayin'

      Ugh, yeah. The problem in STD is the stilted intonation and weird subtitle font choices. Getting through the Klingon scenes is just tiring.

      We're honestly not that far off from real-time seamless translation of known languages. The problem with the universal translator is that it works for novel languages. If they want to encounter new species/languages, I wouldn't mind more episodes like Darmok.
