Lengthy and frequent trips to remote locations, employment and lay off cycles which go up and down with commodities prices, hell, in the oil business they typically work 30 days on 30 days off and that does not work well for most relationships. :shrug:

I used to be 280 which was fat even at 6'1". Now I am down to 240 and would like to lose 20 more pounds. Army height and weight for my age would be 238 so I am just about back to service weight and hope to get better.

Really? When I met you I didn't think you were even close to 280. I thought more in the 230 - 240 range.

I was and that is where I am back now but I did pork up for a while before losing it. Basically, I gained weight due to sleep apnea but after I was diagnosed and started treatment the weight came off pretty quickly. I also started eating healthier, cut out salt, limit red meat, and began walking a lot more. Before I would sit at my desk or in the company car most of the day then go out to eat for lunch and dinner.

Now I try to pack lunch as you can plan ahead, make sure stuff is healthy, and avoid temptation. I feel better, I look better, and I am happier.

Wrt the link in the OP, also the most common places people meet spouses is either at school or at work. In many science majors, but especially geology, it is overwhelmingly male. When you get into the workforce it is even more so. In the office there are usually a few female secretaries but not many women otherwise (I can think of exceptions). So that is both is two strikes.
