Yes, thinking can lead to paralysis. That's why any ad-lib that contains a compliment is better no matter how stupid it is.
Look at her and the first thing that catches your attention (with the exception of boobs or ass) and just add the word nice in front of it.
Nice shoes or nice dress, or nice backpack or nice hair, or nice smile, It really doesn't matter even if it's stupid. I guarantee it gets a smile in return.

If I could do the old, visit myself when I was in High School, that's the first thing I'd tell myself, since I usually over analyzed ever opportunity at conversation and usually just ended up looking like that deer caught in the headlight. Probably the main reason why I didn't date much in HS. Much would be an exageration.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

You had a girlfriend before didn't you? Why can't you just repeat whatever you did the first time? This would make more sense if you were a virgin who's afraid of dogs like Alby.

I've had three girlfriends. The first one nearly forced herself on me. The second one was delivered to me in a box. The third one, well, read the thread I linked to in the OP to see how that worked out; I succeeded despite my best efforts.

I remember being consumed by romantic illusions in high school about meeting The Perfect Girl and instantly falling in love. I tailored my approach accordingly; I analyzed each girl for just long enough to conclude she was imperfect, then moved on to analyzing the next one. Since I naturally never met The Perfect Girl this way, I tended to project perfection onto girls who were simply unapproachable (in some cases ignoring blatant character flaws) and idolize them from a distance. I kind of wish I'd spoken to girls like the one behind me in eleventh-grade English (sweet, cute but not "sexy," painfully shy) and gotten experience talking to women and enjoying their company, without worrying about messianic females delivering me from loneliness forever.

We all know what the results would be, and I don't need to feel insecure about my poll.

Had a plan to ask her if she wanted to join me for lunch today if I saw her. Then got stuck in a conversation with the woman I had my fling with last spring. TA girl happened to show up in the middle of that. No opportunity to ask. Foiled.

Look on the bright side, if she saw you talking to another girl, it could only help your status as desirable. (and less likely that she'll think you're gay)

Well, another pleasant Friday where she came in to the office and sat directly next to me and we talked for an hour. So I don't really have anything to complain about right now.

She's either expecting you to ask her out or else milking you for information for an extremely difficult physics paper. Those are the two most plausible explanations, and the former is more likely. It's also possible that she's stuck on campus a lot and is profoundly bored, but in this era of cell phones that seems improbable. Also possible: she has an abusive ex and is scared to be alone, and nobody else will talk with her.

. . . yeah, it's probably the first one. Please ask her out like a sensible person.

Consulted with wife, she confirms but wonders if there are weird rules about TAs dating students, even if she isn't your student. That aside, Shelok affirms that if she's seeking out your company that much she's likely either into you or deeply lonely.

I agree, It certainly time to take the plunge and just ask her out. If you're that worried, just make it for coffee or some such small thing. But based on what I'm reading, I think you can shoot higher.

Since she's not in my class, and we're both TAs (the only difference being that I'm not a student anymore), there are no rules about it.
