  • Carrier Diplomacy - Taiwan style

In 1996 President Clinton sent two carrier groups to the region of Taiwan and sailed one through the Taiwan Strait. This was in response to Chinese saber rattling over the election of Taiwanese President Lee and his visit to Cornell university. China got the message.

Now...China is sailing an aircraft carrier group through the Strait. In response to Trump's action? Will Trump get the message?

China's aircraft carrier prompts nervous response from Taiwan as it sails through the Taiwan Strait.

"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

If they post a picture of it on Twitter he'll definitely be aware of it.

      How insightful.

The linked article provides no insight into any "message" being sent by China.

It might be a part of mainland China's usual strategy of showing displays of force near the Taiwan Straits to intimidate Taiwan. Or maybe the carrier was simply sailing in Chinese waters.

The chinese have been getting aggresive these past few years with militarisation of disputed islands and "air zones", general sabre rattling and provoking japan.

This all raises real concerns that China may start real trouble in the region whether deliberately or by eror of judgement.

Just because it's flippant doesn't mean it's not poignant.

Did you watch the press conference? Trump wasn't even aware of what Mitch McConnell was saying about sanctions on Russia.

Any Chinese message is heavily muted by their current state of anti-submarine warfare capability.
