  • The knowledge of good and evil

The Serpent told them that they would know good and evil. Was that a lie, or the truth. They already knew not to eat from the tree, so in that sense they already knew good and evil. But they ate from it anyway so they didn't really know good and evil. Eating from it didn't make them know good and evil too. The Serpent told them that they would be like God, knowing good and evil. That was clearly a lie because knowing good and evil, in that sense, is doing what God does.

And God didn't lie when he said that they would die on that day. That's like telling your children that they will be grounded for two weeks and then grounding them for only one. You have the authority to ground them for two, so not lying.

The serpent told them the truth, while God lied by making it sound like the fruit would kill them. It would have been more honest for him to say "if you eat the fruit, I'll kill you."

      I agree.
It also makes one wonder what gods motives were for hiding the knowledge of good and evil from them.
Is it because then they would discover that he (i.e. god) also doesn't always act good?

        Serpent said:

No, you shall not die the death. For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.

        Narrator said:

And the eyes of them both were opened

        God said:

Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil

Not only did God confirm the Serpent's prediction, both of them speak of a plurality of gods. Why didn't Adam and Eve raise any objections to this notion of other gods?

They didn't die... Nobody in the story even mentions death as a consequence, nobody confirms God's prediction. Everybody confirms the Serpent's prediction. Why do you blame the Serpent? He's the only one in the story who didn't blame somebody else. Eve did not tell the Serpent God might change his mind or whatever it is you're replacing death with, be it a lesser punishment or a metaphor for spiritual death. The Serpent aint responsible if God changed his mind. And yes, the Serpent implicitly accuses God of lying - he ascribes a motive for God's deception.

Its a fascinating story and it has pagan roots...

How far back does the story go? Eve was cursed with increased pain during child birth. Recent research suggests anatomically modern women acquired this curse ~200 kya because of babies with larger brains/heads and shoulders - a "modern" problem our hominin ancestors didn't share. And all the world was of one tongue? Again, it appears our ancestors lived in Ethiopia and the Afar Depression. They probably did speak the same language. And from where did God take the Adam for his Garden? Westward of Eden... Follow the Arabian coastline westward from the Persian Gulf and you run into our ancestral homeland. Btw, the Afar Depression floods periodically from the sea... The Red and Aden Seas actually reached into the African rift zone.

So we have story from more than 200,000 years ago describing our emergence from a more primitive state.

A clue can be found in various mythologies - why was God so angry about the Tower of Babel? Man was building a tower to reach God's abode. Why punish the fire bringer? Why did God kick Adam and Eve out of the Garden? Fear of what man might accomplish. But I like your explanation...

As a Cheribum, I have a different take on it. You see... I will be blatantly murdering the enemies of God in the moast horrific way I can imagine. I will plunder their belongings and ravage their wives. Be it Demons or whoever I am charged to kill. Good/evil it matters not. That's my job. After my fun, I will have sex with big titted angels and listen to songs like this as I smoke a fat-ass blunt waiting for God to tell me who to strike down next...
