To give a somehat serious reply: I would buy the 84 ref if we'd talk about a totalitarian model of rule where the gov is the only source of info and where all dissent, opposition and media moaning about the gov gets oppressed. I don't see how this is the case in today's Germany.

The idea is not just to protect the people from totalitarian government. The idea is to protect the people from government. Totalitarian governments are not the only evil governments.
