                            The medieval Welsh, from what we can tell, apparently played a game called "badger in the bag." It is unclear whether the bag contained an unfortunate person or an actual live badger, but either way the point of the game was to beat the hell out of the bag.

                            My medieval lit prof back in college said they also had a game where they tied a cat to a tree, tied a man's arms behind his back, and he tried to kill the cat by head-butting it. So you could say that bear-baiting and such were refined and genteel pastimes. Relatively speaking.
