This election has been a ridiculous nonsense, where a man can openly spout racist rhetoric and get away with it. If she stood up to that bravely and owned it, I genuinely believe it would pay huge dividends for her. Instead the right started bleating and she pulled back like the political creature she is.
She's been attacking him for ages--her attack ads have flooded the networks--and it hasn't done much for her. Attacking his supporters instead seems like an even worse idea. It'd be red meat for all the people who would vote for her anyway, and that's it. It's certainly not going to win her any votes in the vast, apathetic center, most of whom despise both of them and can't decide which one they hate more. She needs to find some way to actually appeal to those people.

Being honest and speaking from the heart instead of following whatever course of action her internal polls dictate would go a long way to winning those people over.

In American politics, the people who end up not voting often cite political ugliness and negative campaigning as some of the reasons they choose not to vote. Intentionally making your campaign uglier and more negative does not have a proven record of success in that regard.

Yes, the last thing Hillary needs is to get down in the mud with Trump where his experience is greater than hers.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Hillery just has to survive the debates. She has him beat every which way in electoral votes.
As long as she doesn't do something really stupid, this should be all over.
As much as people think she is a lying pond scum, people hate Trump even more.

As I understand it (I don't hate myself enough to actually watch his speeches, only read quotes), Trump's campaign is not primarily negative, per se, because it's mostly about how awesome Trump is. Trump is a great businessman. Trump is a first-class negotiator. Trump is a winner. Trump is your big daddy. Trump will make America great again. Trump! Trump! Trump Trump Trump! TRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMP!!! To the extent that he bashes things, it's mostly for their audacity in questioning the incredible Trumpy Trumpness of Trump. Fox News is a lousy channel, because they employ menstruating liars like Megyn Kelly who don't Trump correctly. Yeah. You know what I like about me? I'm me. I'm a serious winner who hires the best people. Like that squirrel out the window. That is one serious, classy squirrel. Good friend of mine. TRUUUUUMP!

Oh, but it is negative... His little pet nick names for his opponents, a chance to take a swipe at them every time he mentions their name.
Sure, he has an ego and it's all about him, but he is a very negative campaigner

He's campaigning against Obama, implying that Hillary is more of the same. Not a bad strategy when appealing to racist Christian whites Trump would never let within 100 feet outside his rallies.

Hillary needs to be the issues candidate, and is actually in mild danger of giving that position away. Kellyanne "I'll shill for anyone" Conway has been pounding the "Trump is talking about issues" angle, which is every bit as outrageously false as anything the donald himself is saying.
