Just finished. "WELL DONE"
At least you won't have to worry about people having a problem getting into the first 100 pages of book 2. (unless you do a martin and take 10 years to finish it)
I will buy it, which is the best compliment I can give it.
Actually I was caught by surprise when it ended because of the volume of the material at the end. (that I still can't believe I didn't notice at first)
Appendix A. (yes missed multiple ones) was good. Maybe a short summary of it used as an intro would have solved the first 100 page issue.
I don't know since I was wearing the glasses of already reading the book. It might have given the reader a base to start with so they wouldn't be reaching to make a connection.
I have other comments but don't want to spoil it for others. I think I've commented enough already.

TYVM! I get a variety of reasons why it's hard to get into (somebody else just told me that the starting story isn't strong enough, more or less the opposite of what you said). I suppose I could stick in a synopsis blurb in the front of the sequel. But I'm glad somebody's enjoying this thing, in any case.

When I give it to my brother to read, I'm going to tell him to read Appendix A first. We'll see if that makes a difference to him. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

In the meantime, if you feel the need to put down your thoughts somewhere, Amazon has a review function . . .

Thanks for the reminder, I have no problem being pimped out for a good cause. (and since I did like the book, it's not like I have to lie)It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Okay, sequel ideas gelling here. But, question for those who read the book: what, in your opinion, made it hard to get into? I ask because the sequel thus far will introduce a substantial number of new characters and concepts, and I want to avoid making the same mistake twice.

You won't have the same problems with a sequel because a short synop of the original should be enough to get people back into it.
But please don't start the main part of the book in the past. If you need to set up something in the past, please start in the present as to not confuse returning readers. And the first chapter should be on our hero, not a new character unless they're being introduced to our familiar group. That's what people will expect. If you're going to wander do it afterwards.
You've done enough appendix ( I still can't believe I missed it originally)
ADD A MAP and most importantly, make sure the first location mentioned in the book is actually on the map.

Thanks. That could be cumbersome to arrange, and will entail the second section of the book jumping six months or so back in time. Would that still be better than starting chronologically and only seeing Yunise again some ways into the book?
Also, the plan was for the sequel to have entirely different appendices. No firm plans, but I would like to have a "traveler's guide" to Babasalim, where a significant part of the book will take place.
