The light-sensitive pigment rhodopsin, for example, bleaches with even a little light exposure and takes something like half an hour to regenerate completely. Other parts of the eye take somewhere in the range of 5-10 minutes to become fully dark adapted.
    I remember from photo-lab dark rooms that you can turn the lights out so it is full on pitch black, and five minutes later turn them on again and you don't hurt your eyes because they never adapted to the fact it was dark.

    Not sure if this is a special case because there isn't even low level light.
