  • Well those factory jobs often get outmoded by automation. They need to adapt to changing forces in the economy. You are right that the working class in the South doesn't vote, but let me point out Hillary had a significant number of votes in the South during the primaries so obviously there is some connection there. Louisiana, for example, had more people vote democrat than republican this time around.

I don't care for anti gay religious bigots by the way. Not my concern.

Well that's where the political parties are supposed to come in. Telling some high school educated factory worker who has just lost his means of keeping a roof over his families head that he needs to 'adapt to changing forces in the economy' isn't likely to be a great vote winner. He needs to hear what you're going to do to help him get a new job and make his life better.

All too often the Dems have just done the equivilent of waving a hand in the air and talking big ideological picture or about the other people who they are helping and the other good things they're doing. It's not enough. People need to hear something that has real meaning to them and their lives. The GOP win a lot of votes by making it sound like they understand normal people's problems, even though their solutions to those problems are ridiculous and usually make things worse not better.

      • The democrats are doing just enough for me to vote for them and they are indeed pushing more funding for education. Republicans want to kill off federal funding aid for college students. The majority of the Republican vote is basically from people influenced by several hot button social issues (like two guys getting married or a trans person using a restroom).

        • I don't disagree in the slightest, but we're talking about people who currently have little or no involvement in politics. Trying to get them to vote by just telling them you're better than the other guys (when they largely just believe all politicians are liars anayway) isn't going to achieve much.

Well that is why democrats need to get out their base. That is what is happening in California, where Democrats number around 40-42% of the voting public (party affiliation). People who think politicans are always lies, won't change.

Edit: correction. California is 44% democrat, 25% republican. The rest of independents are mainly democrat leaning.

            • They can and do change. Just not when the Dems stop running candidates in the south and give the GOP a free monopoly.

Well they are trying to sway Georgia with better candidates and they made inroads in Louisiana. Georgia is a key state that may turn battleground. That has to do with demographic shifts. I would love to see Texas flip. That would effectively destroy the republican party. Texas is what California was 30 years ago. I do like Julian Castro by the way. There needs to be more like that and less Ted Cruzs.

DWS getting kicked out should help. Kerry was trying to push a 50 state strategy and then she abandoned it. Then again that shouldn't be a surprise given that she also refused to help Dem candidates in Florida because she was friends with the GOP incumbents.

Schultz isn't someone I would want in the democratic party. She has to quietly leave.

                    • Much more calm and unified scenes from the DNC. Far more cordial and diplomatic. Bad news for Republicans who wanted the early part of yesterday to carry on. Bernie supporters heeded Bernie's pleas for unity it appears... Mostly.

                        The RNC was the opposite.

The good news for Democrats is the group contained no prominent leaders. The bad news is it contained no prominent leaders.

                              • I think it will be a good boost. The democrats ran a brilliant convention and completely undercut Trump. He reportedly wanted to punch some of the speakers in the mouth. The democrats set a trap and he walked right into it.

Some republicans are covering their faces in embarrassment as to how he has reacted.

Absolutely embarrassing and probably the worst kind of reaction he could have had. This could be the turning point where he plummets. That kind of attitude will turn off many people and even some of his own supporters.

BTW, a new poll has Hillary ahead in Pennsylvania by 9%, up sharply.
