No Business As Usual: Black Xmas is Here

BLM chapters in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay Area have declared December 23rd, 2015 Black Xmas

Two days ago, a Texas grand jury announced their decision of no indictment in the death of Sandra Bland. This young, vibrant Black woman died in police custody, after a racially-motivated stop, a brutal arrest, wrongful bail hearing and unlawful detention. We know Sandra Bland could have been any one of us. So on December 23rd, one of the busiest days of the holiday season, Black communities across the United States are taking brave actions to impede the flow of goods and commerce with peaceful protests to call for an immediate overhaul of the justice system both locally and nationally that will demand accountability for police, removal of grand juries in cases involving police shootings, an immediate halt to militarized police units and weapons, and extensive review of racialized police practices in Black neighborhoods.

Black Xmas is here and there will be no business as usual until we get accountability for our dead, and justice for the living. Instead of buying gifts to fuel this system, Black Xmas is a day of action to reject the degradation of Black families and communities by police, politicians, and predatory companies, and declare our inherent worth. We will disrupt business as usual until city, state, and federal budgets stop funding Black death and start funding Black futures.

Whether cisgendered, trans, or queer; women or men, elders or children – our Black families refuse to live trapped between poverty and police state violence. From slavery to segregation to the rampant state violence of the 21st century, Black communities have lived under the boot of state repression and corporate power for too long. Today, on Black Xmas, in solidarity with migrant, Palestinian and all oppressed people, we proclaim our humanity, reclaim our streets, and exclaim for the world to hear: Black Lives Matter.

In 2015, more than 300 Black people have been murdered by the police. These are not episodic incidents. They are traumatic reminders of this country’s long pattern of devalued Black humanity and state sanctioned violence. Policing in the United States remains governed by a racist system of racial codes, codified into law and cemented into apartheid practices that deny Black humanity and disregard Black life. There are no bad apples, the whole system is guilty, and must be transformed from the bottom up, from the outside, in.

Today, on Black Xmas, we will not bargain for hollow reforms that continue to alienate us from political and economic participation. We will not entertain an official story that does not include our voices. We demand real, authentic and systemic change, now!

Blocking roads to airports so that people miss their flights, closing down malls so that people can't buy presents.

(CNN)—Black Lives Matter protesters temporarily blocked roads to airports in Minneapolis and San Francisco on Wednesday as part of their "Black Xmas" demonstrations against what they say is an epidemic of police abuses.

Another demonstration was held in the Minneapolis area's Mall of America, where five people were arrested for various offenses such as trespassing, disorderly conduct and an unrelated outstanding arrest warrant, said Denis Otterness, deputy chief of the Bloomington Police Department. Another eight people were arrested at the airport, CNN affiliate WCCO reported.

In California, nine women were arrested for briefly shutting down an exit ramp on U.S. Highway 101 to San Francisco International Airport, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"CHP has moved all protestors off of the freeway. Travelers will make it to the airport on-time," CHP Capt. Christopher Sherry said on Twitter. "There are many dangers associated with walking onto a busy freeway. There are also consequences that follow."

In Minnesota, Black Lives Matter activists formed a human chain and blocked roads to both terminals at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, bringing holiday travelers to a temporary standstill.
Demonstrators also congregated inside Terminal 2, causing the federal Transportation Security Administration to shut down both security checkpoints there for 45 minutes, said Patrick Hogan, a spokesman for the Minneapolis airport.

"Protestors are departing the airport, and the situation here is slowly returning to normal. Some flights at Terminal 2 were delayed due to the fact that, with the security checkpoints closed, travelers couldn't get screened in order to get to their gates," Hogan said Wednesday afternoon.

A mile away earlier in the day, scores of protesters assembled inside Minneapolis' Mall of America, but police in riot gear and mall security officers dispersed the crowd, pushing them outside the shopping center.

Stores on the east side of the mall were closed Wednesday morning in expectation of the protest, two store managers told CNN. Customer traffic was also down Wednesday, they said.

Some of the dispersed protesters left the mall and boarded trains to the airport, CNN affiliate WCCO reported.

The airport had advised travelers to leave extra early because of the delays caused by protesters, the facility said on Twitter.
The activist group Black Lives Matter was planning demonstrations in six U.S cities on Wednesday, which it was calling "Black Xmas" and a national day of action.

The activists accuse police agencies nationwide of bias against the black community.

The group was planning to block the U.S. Highway 101 exit to the San Francisco airport on Wednesday, CNN affiliate KGO reported.

We need to publically fund Black Lives Matter so that they can shut down airports. If we don't we're killing black people

It's one thing to argue that there are better ways to accomplish this, or that they're just grandstanding, or whatever, but Kidicious sounds more like "these black people should stop complaining about getting shot while white people are trying to spend money"

Yeah, I'm not sure on this tactic. It is getting attention (good), but my fear is that it may alienate some that are sympathetic to their cause. But I guess if you're that angry, that isn't a consideration.
If they just limited it to stores and business districts I think they could accomplish one without the other. Airports is something else.
