Back in the day, I had a couple telemarketing jobs that were pretty dodgy. One was selling brokered radio advertising at inflated prices, under the guise of "for the kids" safety program sponsorships. Certainly somewhat sleazy, but it was really just taking advantage of idiots who had no clue that they could get double the advertising at half the price by just calling the radio station directly.
I later graduated to writing the copy for such ad campaigns, which paid well enough for me to buy my first computer (a Commodore 128, complete with dot matrix printer).
