So...any relevant questions about racism in the South? I know quite a bit about it actually.
(Yes, I know...I said ask me "anything"...my mistake, but what is said is said)."I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. Originally posted by PLATO View PostIt is both simple and complex but boils down to one thing primarily...lack of education and understanding. There was a culture that evolved after the Northern Invasion. Most people felt that blacks were property and that the north had stolen that property from them. The many atrocities that the north committed against the South enforced the feeling that the north had somehow "wronged" the people of the South. Since they were virtually powerless against their conquerors, the people of the South took out their animosity on the former slaves and free blacks equally. This feeling, combined with a very low education rate and fear mongering Southern politicians created a cultural and racial divide that has yet to be overcome. Many people in the South today have overcome most racial stereotypes, but there is still a large number who haven't...mostly the poorer and uneducated elements of society( the so called "rednecks" if you will). In combination with this, there is still the powerful elite and political class that utters the correct platitudes but still maintains the "old boys" back room nod to racism. Progress is being made however. Many Southern Universities are actively supporting and encouraging diversity. Younger people, for the most part, are learning that people are people regardless of their heritage. The reasons that the South is still racist is basically that their is not enough political will to buck the elites by politicians and simply enough time has not passed for the influences of the past to have faded away. In time, I see the South being less racist than the north...it is certainly more on peoples minds here than in the north. For now though, only an uneducated and uninformed person would say that racism has vanished from the South...there is progress though!I drank beer. I like beer. I still like beer. ...
