They claim to be christians, accept the bioble as holy book and believe that you need to follow christs example in order to get to heaven.

Cannot see a reason to not call them christians (and cannot see an authority who has the right to decide it ... after all the only person who claims to be supreme leader of all christians, the pope, is only accepted as supreme authority within the catholic church ... and aside from this there are only smaller groups/sects, with no supreme church leader

Thei founder of Mormonism was a con man. Before cooking up the whole Mormon scam he wandered about New York state supporting himself with the Comoros Stone scam, a scam in which the con convinces the victim that he has a stone that once belonged to Blackbeard which will take the victim to buried treasure if he pays the con a fee. Comoros was supposedly the island on which Blackbeard buried his treasure hoard. Interestingly, from the word Comoros we get "Mormon" and "Mt. Comorah", the sacred mountain of the alleged thirteenth tribe of Israel. Before switching to his religion scam Joseph Smith had been incarcerated and/or deported from most of the surrounding counties in New York state. Within 3 years of establishing his new religion every courthouse in that section of New York had burned down - along with the court records.

Then it is a good thing that god sent his angels to John Smith to change his wicked ways.

Some religions are more like an intergenerational game of telephone. The elders of the village will recount stories they heard in their youth, but since they're senile they'll get some of the details wrong. And then the next generation messes it up some more when they get old, and so on. And that's how ancient Israelites came to believe their ancestors fought people with iron chariots.

Especially, the stories of the founder of the mormons are not more unbelievable than the stories of certain catholic saints ... with the only exception, that most of those saints (with unbelievable stories) lived more than half a millenium ago and Joseph smith just barely 2 centuries ago.

Many of the saints of the catholic church claimed to receive visions or commands by god (or angels) ... and lots of catholics believe that this is true ... no big difference between them and Joseph Smith therefore, except for the greater temporal difference to most of those saints of the catholic church.

Not to mention the wilder stories of the saints ... i.e. the miracles they supposed to have performed ... like the bilocation by Padre Pio (splitting himself in two and leading 2 church services in 2 different churches, hundreds of kms aqway, at the same time), the levitation of St. Joseph, or the special magical connection of several saints with animals, especially birds.

They clearly fall into the greater Christian belief system but most other Christian groups would consider them a heritical cult.
