Borders are keeping you safe from an imaginary, or ideological enemy.
The US could deal with and integrate 10's of millions of immigrants from Europe and Asia from population pools 100x larger than it over the years, but it allegedly cannot deal with Mexicans a population pool 5x smaller today, and in Europe, there are 850M people living in the Eurozone, but we cannot accept 1M people (a bot more than 1%), spread them out and enable them to get educated and start a living.
