"I heard in Germany cars can drive without speed limit, but shouldn't this be limited by the speed of light?"

  • #2
Only until you manage to create an FTL drive.
AFAIK you don´t even have to obey the law of causality ... so, if your FTL car also is allows you to travel back in to the past and prevent your birth (or the birth of anyone who is involved in the creation of the FTL car) well ... it is not forbidden

How will people see your blinkers in the rear view so they know to get out of the fast lane?

Well, it is still forbidden to cause crashes ... therefore I guess if you drive an FTL car you have to drive extra carefully ... and slow down to sublight if you encounter slower cars in your lane ... you also always have to obtain a distance to the preceding car that allows you to do an emergency brake if the other car stops, without crashing into it ... which, ac cording to the commonly taught rule of the thumb is: Braking distance (in m) = speed (in km/h) / 2.

So with other words, if you drive with lightspeed (= 299 792.458 km/s = 1079252848.8 km/h ) you have to keep a safety distance of 539626424.4 m = 539626.4 km to the preceding car. If you don´t do it, in the case of a crash you will automatically be considered the one who caused the crash

Seeing as how the circumference of the earth is only 40,000 km or so, maintaining that kind of safety distance might be a bit hard.

That´s true ... also the longest german highway is just 962 km ... may put a certain limit on people who want to drive with FTL ... unless they indulge in reckless driving, of course

I'd hate to think that the driver right in front of me was actually trying to keep a safe separation distance behind me.
