I am sipping wine in my apartment at Fermilab after attending an upsetting church service, eating a wonderful Indian buffet, and playing outside with my daughter in the sunny crisp autumn air.

Why was the church service upsetting?

Singing of "God bless America", asking the congregation to stand and salute, a long presentation on the greatness of soldiers and the US, and so on.

Yeah, I can see that being an issue. "Being in the world but not of it" really doesn't work with displays of patriotism in the sanctuary.

The closest my former church came to it was in 1976, when in celebration of the bicentennial we all dressed in homemade period attire and attended a 3 hour service in the "old style", complete with ushers armed with staves.

There can be no doubt that the general condition of congregations in those earlier days was one on somnambulancy, for we find in the old records minutes of officers whose duty it was to go up and down the aisles during service time with a rod bearing a tuft of feathers at one end and a brass ball at the other; the feather end to wake up the women sleepers, and the brass ball the men. How could it be otherwise with hard working people, and the interminable sermons?
