The lit class at MIT was (and I think still is) taught by Joe Haldeman. While that sounds great, it turns out that it Joe Haldeman is a very demanding professor and that class was one of the harder ones at the place.

Our lit teacher was a hard ass, but if read the book and actually gave a ****, it wasn't bad since many others hadn't.
But how could you sign up for a class on LOR and not read or have read the books? (it wasn't hard for him to figure out those that had just seen the movies)

On the other SCIFY course, since I was at Bradley in Peoria, Jose P Farmer was often a guest speaker in our classes.

Reading the books wasn't the problem. Joe Haldeman had a high bar for analysis/writing to explain/explore the important themes of the books. He demanded new insight and everything had to be rigorously defended/backed up.

          That's why I added 'and gave a ****'.

I always enjoyed when we had guest speakers and our professor would trot out all of his pet theories on the books just to have the author go "huh, I didn't mean that at all".

The instructor for this lit course looks to be a grad student/struggling writer. I guess that's the difference between MIT and UMD.

I'm getting a BS in astronomy with a minor in BS. How cool is that?

If you want an academic research job it is important to get your PhD from Harvard or MIT or similar. UMD which is top 20 isn't good enough.

I have been told a couple of times that often they have 3-4 excellent candidates and then they hire the one who graduated from Harvard.

Well, it would probably be a little weird anyway if I got my PhD from the same place I got my bachelor's.

I nearly did a Masters of Engineering just to I could be a BE ME.

The Nativity Fast begins tomorrow. Didn't want to be an egomaniac and start a whole thread just to say I wouldn't be talking; don't want to go jacking a thread for it either. So, Lori: please remember that you're a mensch, and that you need to take care of your health in all respects, physical, mental, and whatever state of being may be ascribed to an uploaded consciousness. Get your damn back fixed, stay positive by whatever means necessary, and take back your life. Ciao.
