  • Please enlighten an american on German TV, movies and comedy

As an American, I am part of a culture that imports things from across the world. Besides cars, electronics, clothing, furniture, etc. we also import culture. I see US remakes of foreign shows (such as the Office, Secrets and Lies, House of Cards), foreign movies, especially from France, Japan and South Korea. While I know Bollywood is a thing, especially in India, it hasn't had much (maybe even any) impact on me. There are also foreign TV shows that have made there way here, especially telenovelas.

However, besides some early classics - Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Metropolis - recent German movies that have made it to America seem dominated by Nazis - Downfall (which contains maybe one of the biggest movie meme's ever), Das Boot, North Face, Into the White, plus many others. In fact the only recent German movie I can think of that doesn't have any National Socialists in it is Run Lola Run. I can't think of any German comedies or comedians.

So if you're a German please enlighten me on German TV, movies and comedy.

Perhaps you should watch "Knocking on heavens door" with Till Schweiger
or Anatomie 1 and 2, with Franka Potente

They are not among the newest german movies, but I think successful enough that they might have been synchronized to english.
And they don´t feature any Nazis
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "He has fallen in battle and I must take him to the Einherjar in Valhalla"

Do you speak the language? If you understand why literally all Germans laugh at this kind of sketch, you will have come a long way.

Proteus, I'll check out those movies. Thanks for the suggestion.

          Ecthy,

I don't speak German unfortunately. To me it seemed like the dinner never had a chance to finish his food, because of well intentioned people asking him about his food. When he did his table mate had the punchline, which I'm guessing was something like, "he's a slow eater." Sorry

                  Lasko - Fist of God

I actually first saw this show in France: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1305627/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

It was about a soldier who decided to become a monk, but ends up fighting all sorts of crime with kung fu. He also teaches his fellow monks how to fight.
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

Goodbye Lenin is THE german film to watch.
                          Run lola run is mediocre.
lives of others is boring unless you're old
