    Bad.

      Bad ...
aside from the usual reasons also,
because they were a huge factor in the downfall of the byzantine empire

Moronically simplistic poll. As a protest, I will continue the discussion in the other thread.

Well, that, and Imran already replied there and stuff.

Voted "good," though not good for the people of the time. The European exposure to the much older, sophisticated, and more intellectual eastern cultures started a process of synthesis that created the modern world.
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty…we will be remembered in spite of ourselves… The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the last generation… We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.
                - A. Lincoln

You don't know what the alternative would have been, though. Maybe our history is the worst of different alternatives without the crusades. Many would argue against your 'modern world' as one of imperialism, colonialism, and oppression.

True, but, then, they would be arguing against change. By the time of the Crusades, even the Islamic world had become more static and status-quo-oriented (and would continue to become more so under the Ottomans), and there weren't any dynamic cultures of any size in the rest of Eurasia or Africa. The ancient world is full of examples of imperialism, colonialism, and oppression, so you can't choose between worlds that had those features and worlds that didn't. The difference would be that the average lifespan today would be 35 years, and the main occupation subsistence farming.

                      Good.

You think if it hadn't been for the Crusades that noble asshats would have just decided not to kill, rape, and plunder? Of course they would have just killed, raped, and plundered someone else for some other "reason". The main effect being the Renaissance probably would have been delayed, if not outright cancelled. Meaning we are likely to have been born into pre-industrial times. That is, those of us that were born, most (if not all) of us would never have existed. Even if somehow we managed to avoid this fate and there was no significant technological/ancestry impact, the chances of Hitler having conquered the world would have been greater.

So if you're against the crusades, you must be for Hitler ruling the world.

At 5/1/2, Crusaders dominated the battlefield for centuries which made them an excellent tool for rolling over the AI.

So I've got to go with "good".

The Cleveland Crusaders haven't played since the mid 70s. ...and they weren't very good.
