A controversial drug to treat low sexual desire in women won approval from U.S. health regulators on Tuesday, but with a warning about potentially dangerous low blood pressure and fainting when taken with alcohol.


Moreover, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the first approved drug for the condition, to be sold under the brand name Addyi, will only be available through certified health care professionals and pharmacies due to its safety issues.


The drug has been nicknamed "female Viagra" in media reports, even though it does not work like Pfizer Inc's blockbuster Viagra pill for men that in 1998 became the first approved drug for erectile dysfunction.


Flibanserin needs to be taken every day. Unlike Viagra, which affects blood flow to the genitals, flibanserin works on the brain. It is similar to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRI's, that include antidepressants such as Prozac.

that is why I am asking. Viagra for men works through the circulatory system. This female version is screwing with the chemicals in a woman's brain. That is a big difference. Would men really want to chance or worse, guilt their woman that 'if you want to save our relationship...take these?'

I would love to pop a pill like a guy can and enjoy sex more often, but this pill is just not it! I can only imagine the horror stories in the coming years!

that is what is so worrying. It may be quite effective for women whose chemicals are imbalanced, but many will actually take this pill who are not. They may be mentally bored or suffering from stressful situations or gasp! Just tired! Their significant others may encourage them to go on it. What then?

just money, a car, internet, dinner, Viagra.... I mean come on?!. I left a trail of wreckage in my younger years. not proud of it... it wears on you after I while to be honest.

Honestly, I am not the same women I was 20 years ago. Back then I was in an extremely abusive relationship. I have a metal plate in my neck today. I know that just telling a women to just say no or get counseling doesn't work. In counseling, I found there are many women with no real voice. They are too nice. They want to make it work no matter what! That is why I say mentally this is a disaster. I know there are many nice guys out there who respect their wives. Unfortunately, there are also many who really don't!

it should be the woman... if you want talk to a doctor... if you want try it. my doctor handed me a sample pill and said "go home a play with it". really... ok. but with the side effects listed for this new pill... I wouldn't have done Cialis. no way. "total recall = don't f* with your brain pale"

Cialis was a test drug for people who had had heart conditions... it didn't help - but even test couple did report something go read it. go figure.

the first time I did Cialis........ massive back pain... like wow, this sucks. but that was only the first time.

Naturally, it goes beyond. That is why I am upset that this was pushed through. Most couples will look at this as a miracle pill like birth control pills, but will the average couple realize how it was pushed through or take notice of the legitimate strong warnings?
