He's a physicist, I think. He's saying that without tech he could still come up with theories, but would have no way of testing them without various gizmos.

I´m sure I would enjoy my past hobby ... Archery ... even without modern technology.
Same goes for reading books (I am sure that I will never let a kindle fire replace real books in my home).
I am sure that I wouldn´t enjoy programming as much without modern technologies (hardware and IDEs, for example)
I am also sure that I wouldn´t enjoy computergaming as much ... especially Kerbal Space Program
I am also sure that I wouldn´t enjoy running on a treadmill as much without todays technology (fitnessswatches, pedometers, HRMs)Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."

Reading and woodworking are certainly easier with modern technology, but I have both paper books and hand tools (I plan to keep all my fingers, so no power tools other than a drill).Graffiti in a public toilet
Do not require skill or wit

Hubby got his basement man cave, I got my basement Woodshop! I would definitely miss my power tools! My daughter and I made her an awesome bed! When she left, I had reconfigured the princess canopy in to use as a rug loom! Then she returned when she started college. It now sports a half finished rug and she has her clothes hung up on the half she doesn't sleep on! Back on point, it would be tough to make a bed without power. Hmmm. Perhaps, I could with ropes and limbs, but I doubt it would look as nice!

We haven't ever used a GPS, only compass and maps. We trust it more. One backpacker we met was using his Gps to locate springs. There was one that he could never find with his GPS coordinates. He was surprised when we told him that the map coordinates were wrong! We directed him to the spring which was located 1/4 mile away from the coordinates on the official map said it was. My advice....get a compass!Originally posted by loinburger View PostBackpacking is about as low-tech as I get, and even there I'm aided by modern technology, in particular my emergency GPS transponder that lets me say "**** it, I'm going to go on a solo hike and get bitten by a rattlesnake"
Edit add: Bite the rattlesnake first! They are delicious.

I don't use a GPS for navigation when backpacking, I don't do enough bushwhacking to warrant it. Instead I've got this doohickey where you press a button and it sends out a radio signal saying "These are my coordinates and I've been bitten by a rattlesnake"<p style="font-size:1024px">HTML is disabled in signatures

I like remote... I mean, anyone can backpack. it's not rocket science... but every time you do it, longer durations at a time, distance and time. you get a little better. it's weird. cant explain it any better. pack weight, it's all about weight. everything you take has to have duel purpose.
