  • The Nazi Ship the US uses to train its Coast Guard

Why is the US still using a Nazi tall ship?
The Eagle was built by the Nazis and fought for Hitler in World War Two - so how did a tall ship that once flew the swastika end up as a training vessel for new US Coast Guard cadets?
Quite a cool story, actually, and in no way bashing the US - just that they're still using an ex-Nazi tall ship...

Yeah, and the old U-505 which was also a Nazi vessel is on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and millions of people have visited it over the years.

      SO YAWN.

No, it's a good story: Nazi stuff put to good use, like the U-505, educating people about the stupidity of war...

Honestly, it's not a troll thread, it just happens to have 'US' and 'Nazi' in the same thread title.

I didn't read it as a troll. I was just stating nothing new. I fondly remember seeing the U505 when I was a kid (yeah back in the stone age)
I was impressed at it for being a submarine, not as much that it was a NAZI one. Yes, anything for the education benefit. And if nothing else, it drew me to a Museum when I saw a lot of other educational things. (just that some other items were not exactly exciting.)

There we are then: The Nazis were indirectly responsible for your education in a small but tangible way.

The germans achieved some pretty amazing engineering feats over the years, and the period under Nazi rule wasn't an exception.

Yeah, thank god we got some of them to come to America to help our Space Industry.

And yes, there have been many influences on my education. The source is not as important as the experience.

I am surprixsed that the USA just has a Type IX C on display.
I would have assumed that another type of submarine would have been more worthy of display in US museums ... the type XXI (called Electroboat).
They may not have provided an impact on war anymore (war ended at a time when germany just had sent the first 2 of them on war patrol) but their impact on submarine-development in USA (which took over 2 of them) and USSR was surely as high as the impact of the german rocket development on the american space program

Well the 505 was the only one captured that was made available to the Chicago Museum. You take what you can get.

And Moby, I don't think saying YAWN qualifies as falling for your bait.

The other thread is an actual discussion of different theories.

Except that you accuse me of 'making crap up' despite my providing concrete proof regarding the latinised first name of one Mr Vespucci.
