I am part way through Picketty. Due to the capital destruction in the early 20th century, most capital in Europe (which is high) is due to the income of the last 50 years and not the investment income of the last 100-200+.

I still need to read the BBC article, but I could believe very limited reparations due to damages in the 30s/40s.

Perhaps I'd have more sympathy if they didnt still have the caste system and millions living in desperate poverty while the government play at space programs.

I read a Jared Diamond book once that explained the purpose of reparations in non-state societies; they basically exist to express contrition and restore a damaged relationship between two people who have to continue to coexist. Basically, I killed your cow or whatever, here's two calves and a fine bag of beads or something to show how sorry I am so we can both get over this without starting a horrible cycle of bloody raids. Diamond noted that in modern times, where people have large numbers of chance encounters with strangers, and state authorities exist to sit on blood feuds, this whole conception of justice has gone by the wayside.

Personally, I don't get what reparations are supposed to accomplish once all the actually guilty or damaged parties are dead. It's absurd to punish a non-guilty party for happening to have inherited from a stinker. You're punishing one group, and rewarding another, for a matter of historical happenstance. And yes, that's leaving out the issue everyone's already raised of where to draw the line. If you go far enough back, every one of us owes reparations to himself.
