What a complete pile of bollocks. "They want to remove a statue of a traitor leader? What next? They'll make up all start talking in Yankee accents?!?"
Robert E Lee was a soldier. He did his duty and he did it well.
He was a Confederate soldier who owed his loyalty to the Confederacy.
I think it right and proper that he be honoured in the former Confederate states. It is a soldiers duty to "do or die, not to question why".
He was a confederate soldier. You remember, those traitors who tried to break up the United States of America. Why would he be honoured in one of the United States of America?

There is a George Washington statue near Trafalgar Square. Why? Why!?
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
He was a commissioned officer in the army of the United States of America who decided that he owed more loyalty to his state than his country even though he acknowledged that the southern cause, the right to own slaves, was morally wrong. He had sworn an oath to his country, he had never before sworn an oath to his state or the Confederacy. To me he seems to be a man with a flawed moral compass.
"I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

Because George Washington's country has saved Britain's a** on multiple occasions. Because the American Revolution was also an important episode in the struggle between King and Parliament to establish who actually rules Great Britain.
Let me guess, was the Washington statue commissioned by Whigs?

WTF?

I always get a kick out of Americans who are appalled by the treason of the Confederacy. Your country wouldn't exist if it weren't for treason, you thick bastards.

Oliver Cromwell.
Also, he when he surrendered he prevented an insurgency from happening. That's good.
Why are you bringing up Cromwell? Most of what we put into the Constitution regarding the military was intended to prevent a Cromwell popping up over here!
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
We still commemorate Alexander the Great, and he was a monster. Robert E. Lee was not as clever nor as influential, but also not an amoral megalomaniac. So sure, let him keep his statue.

Australians first loyalty is to their state *shrug* makes sense to me.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..
