The Philippines. Moved here when she was 10. Her parents were idealists from privileged backgrounds and thought Australia would be more egalitarian than the US, where most of the rest of their family emigrated to. I think her Dad's thinking was largely shaped by Star Trek. Anyway, in classic style the former aristocrats took low paying jobs and learnt to live without servants, although both ended up doing very well career wise.
They felt guilty for denying their two kids a life of privilege, and spoilt the hell out of them. A couple of shallow, self-centred, selfish, materialistic brats. But all I saw when we first met and fell in love was a demure, self-effacing, pretty Asian girl.Comment
