Honestly, it should be an illegal restraint on trade under the constitution but all of the automakers before Tesla bowed to pressure and signed up dealers. Tesla decided having outside dealers would undermine their brand and purchasing experience; they want all dealerships to be one price with no haggling, they wanted much more customer service but if other companies owned the dealerships then that wouldn't be possible. Republican controlled states have responded by trying to outlaw Tesla's direct sales business model but slowly the courts have been working and now Republicans have just finally started retreating from their illegal restraints of trade.

It is really a story about how corrupt the American political system has become and how big money special interests get to write what ever laws they want even if they are obviously unconstitutional.

Yes, they have updated things like engines and drive trains but it is still basically a Lotus 7 from 1957.

Okay. I know nothing of that vehicle, but Tesla has the advantages of practicality and not looking like something out of Siggy Freud's sketchbook.

And as a result of that, Caterhams can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds.

No Lotus 7 could do that.

So, no. It didn't pre-date Caterham as a company, by virtue of the fact that Lotus 7s were around earlier.

Because Lotus 7s couldn't do it.

              Y'see?

Ok, if you want to be a pendant then be one but the shape of the car, most of its parts, it's functionality, and everything else all is from the 1957 Lotus 7. Hell, Caterham started as a kit car maker making parts for people who wanted a Lotus 7 but couldn't afford them. They were even licensed to do so from Lotus. Yes, they have bought newer designed parts from modern automakers but they were tacking them on the same basic Lotus design. Everything was a modest evolution from that starting point.

As a teen I loved listing over cars which were not sold in the US and I regularly read CAR Magazine which seemed to do a bit on Caterham and the Lotus 7 at least once a year. They liked to highlight British cars but pickings were slim in those days so the Caterham seemed to interest motoring enthusiasts more than yet another review of the ancient Rover Metro.

Why are you repeatedly telling me stuff I already knew and haven't disputed at any point?

I think the first time I heard of Tesla was in "Command and Conquer?"

Would be nice if they felt the same way about oil companies.

Businesses don't like competition. Gas-burners feel threatened by electric cars. Retailers feel threatened by direct sales.
Twas ever thus, and it has nothing to do with party affiliation.

MrFun is a little tone-deaf in this area, but we knew that. (Of course, the same can be said of those who decry tax credits for alternative power without acknowledging massive government support for the oil industry.)

Capitalism demands competition, or it's just one big scam. Every man who can call himself a conservative and keep a straight face should be opposing this.
