In the past waiting lists were a real issue at various points, but its something they've invested heavily into reducing. It's never going to be a perfect system, and if you're wealthy enough to get private insurance anyway its certainly not going to hurt. Having a system in place though that ensures everyone has treatment is just logically more effective and certainly more compassionate.
I know there's a false image in the US that systems like the NHS are heavily rationed or whatever, but its simple not true. I posted an article a while back about some Americans who'd lived in the UK giving their opinions on the two systems. They were unanimous in prefering the UK one.
