  • I bet strictly speaking none of the TVA got a quick pay back on investment but it sure as hell has been a valuable asset for the country for these last 80 years.

Interesting that you should mention TVA. While the economic benefits to the Tennessee River basin are unquestionable, I do have a beef with TVA...

My Grandfather's farm was a good portion of Kentucky Lake. TVA paid him 3 cents on the dollar for what the land was worth. Nearly ruined him. The Paris Landing State Park Hotel sits on the site of my Great Uncle's house. They took his land too. The hotel is where we hold the family reunions for that side of the family. When the lake is low, you can still see the foundation of my Grandfather's grocery store in a shallower part of the lake.

Not that I am *****ing...just a reminder that these mega government projects, while overall beneficial, do have a human cost to some.

      • How would you feel of your gramps had been compensated at 1dollar to the dollar?

        • Farming is only around 2% of California's GDP; California would survive without it.

I would still believe that the economic benefits are unquestioned. I just wouldn't have the beef with TVA anymore. Probably would not have given much thought to mega projects having a human cost either.

            Hmmm....

Having a dry environment to farm in is a huge benefit as long as you have ample irrigation. It increases available sunlight, increases the efficiency of the mechanism to take up water/nutrients (driven by evaporation), makes most farming tasks easier, gives more control over watering (overwatering being a problem), and reduces many disease and pest problems.

                • I'll get right on that. I estimate the project will cost $28 billion and take 30 years to complete if the courts are in our favor.

Jeez, my father's family was from Paris, Tennessee, and owned a store about 10 miles north of the town. AFAIK they didn't get flooded by the lake though.
