You don't have real money in PayPal either. It's also scrip. You can buy things with it, but it isn't FDIC insured. I'd avoid PayPal for the same reasons to be honest.

Checks are extremely convenient. Particularly since you can now deposit them by taking a picture with your phone. I keep a few in my wallet generally.

My wallet also never has more than a hundred dollars in it, and I mostly use a credit card for my transactions which is extremely secure since I can dispute payments if it is stolen.

You don't have to maintain a balance in PayPal either. If you're really paranoid you can use an empty bank account you link to it or put a stop payment order on it. Then only use it through your Credit Card.

For buying online ... I'd much rather give some random person/business my PayPal email address than my credit card number.

In Norway, we quit using checks a couple decades ago. Nowadays we use debit/credit cards for almost anything. And banking on cell phone or pc. If I need to pay a friend for something, say a cinema ticket, I take out my phone and pay him in half a minute. Checks are for old people. And cash too really, it's almost never used anymore. Last time I used money was in January when I filled my bus card and forgot they have machines for it nowadays on the bus stops, so I took out money from an ATM (only bus card or cash on bus, and paying in cash cost 40% more so thats just not something you do if you can avoid it).

I pay my rent by check. My landlord doesn't have electronic payments and not enough tenants to make setting it up worthwhile. My roommate pays for the utilities and we pay him for our share with a check. It's faster and easier than trying to set up some electronic system. We could probably use electronic bank transfers but why bother? It takes all of 30 seconds to hand him a check and for him to cash it with his phone. If I'm at the store and for some reason my card has declined (this has happened periodically when I visit a new city) I can write a check, takes a few seconds, easy peasy. I don't use checks because I'm a Luddite, far from it, I use checks because they're often more convenient than electronic systems.

As i get older, I'm liking cash better and better. No record of the transaction, and can't be hacked.

Usually only one check a month. My Mortgage since their only electronic option is an auto one, and I'm uncomfortable with an auto pay of that much.

The only other checks are usually to my mechanic if the bill is for more than I have cash in my pocket. He's a buddy and figure why stick him for the Credit card service fee.

Over here, checks are very common in the business world (especially small and medium businesses, and very much so outside the big cities) for payments, since they can be handed over by the recipient for him to pay his own providers, and thus avoiding a 1,2% tax on every bancarized transaction.They can also be used for differed payment, and for paying in installments, at no aditional cost.

I'm finding that if you mention 'pay in cash' it can actually lead to an additional discount.
