I will bring up a more up to date article, but this former official makes a good point. Russia's estimated decline in the GDP officially is -3.7%. But this guy claims the authorities are fudging the numbers to cover up how bad the situation is. The decline is probably around -6% to -7% taking into account discrepancies.

The essential long-term prospects of the Russian economy are dire. Many of the best educated leave for better opportunity in the west. The population is in decline. Infrastructure is collapsing and oil prices are not projected to bounce back anytime soon.

Russia has spent half of its foreign reserves (as in an article I posted before) and will deplete it all by 2017. The bigly (lol) problem with that is hyperinflation will then set in and its economy will decline even further. My belief is Putin is spending his foreign reserves on military deployments. The depletion of foreign reserves also reduces your ability to influence other nations and puts a major dent in your economic status globally.

Hang tight, our forum Russians. You are going to be in for a very rocky ride. Perhaps sticking your nose in our elections isn't such a good idea.

Actually, Crimea rejoined Russia without any fighting. And it's the Kiev who started a war against their own Donetsk and Luhansk regions. And even then, less than 1/10 of Ukraine is, how you call it, a "war zone". Doesn't explain why entire economy is destroyed, not just 10% of it.
