Users can take back their thanks whenever they want. Maybe somebody stopped liking you and decided the best way to show that was to find all the posts of yours they'd thanked and remove said thanks.

but even so... god damn that's awesome that I would motivate someone to be so petty

Just went and removed a 3 year old thanks (and then put it back). So it is conceivable that someone is taking the internet too seriously.

Maybe someone who thanked you a lot had his account deleted (although this would be surprising, considering that, with 300 thanks it should have been someone very active).

Or something with the forums database (like delete actions of older postings or something like this)

... my 'thanks' are different, too. I know I've 'thanked' more than I've been 'thanked' - now it is opposite. Each total seems off by about 20... odd.

Program each spambot to thank your posts every day.

Your thanks count should skyrocket.

Problem solved.
