I'm not sure if an affiliate really counts as "mainstream media". That's somebody at that one station filling some empty air time because they ran out of national and local stuff IMHO.

Though it was good writing for the blurb... just shows that the particular affiliate is slightly more worldly than their national counterparts.

I bet the station "fans" were annoyed that they didn't cover the local high school sports games instead though

If I look for "no go" zones in Britain and France, suddenly my search works, all of the majors are discussing those and this topic features prominently. If I want to know about Palestinian stabbing 11 Israelis on a bus - it's there, so is Ukrainian airport fight, Tutankhamun's glued beard and German's whacko Hitler selfie.

Probably a bit out of date, but when I was visiting the US in 1999 there was a military coups in Pakistan, then a relatively new nuclear power. I heard the news over PBS radio, and thought "I must listen to the news tonight". Got home, put on CBS news. Lead story William Shatner cleared of murdering his wife. Second story a legendary basketball player died of old age. Military coup in a nuclear power? Didn't make the half hour national news broadcast. Lead in every free to air news broadcast in Oz.

There's a lot of you never see. Most major newspapers still do a very credible job. Most people don't get the majority of their news from the nightly broadcast.

And ricketyclik, I will agree that news editors, due to limited broadcast time, choose stories more on what they think their viewers are interested in vs what is globally important.
But in all fairness, sometimes people would rather hear about weddings instead of killings.

Actually if you look back the original references are to all mainstream news and not just TV news. You only seemed to add that on later.

And why did I defend it? I thought I was defending the concept that not all US mainstream news was crap. Your comment that US papers have a decent reputation pretty much sums up what I was talking about. I doubt many Americans rely on the just TV to get their news. There are way to many alternative these days.
