I've been saying that for most of my life and stand by it. If your counter-claim is that "more or less honest" politicians also exist, that is just sad -- and tantamount to agreement.
Look at the money; look at the legislative outcomes. It's not exactly a subtle connection. The fact that politicians you favor are in the pockets of causes and companies you admire or agree with, does not make it OK.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

There are probably plenty of reasonably honest politicians at the local level. The broader your constituency, however, the greater the temptation to stretch the truth to ensure that your rhetoric appeals to your audience. So it's basically impossible for successful national-level politicians to remain totally honest.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

It's also worth considering that the larger the constituency the more a politician has to be able to consider issues that are larger than the local level. There are times when the only way to acheive a larger goal is to vote in a way that seems unjust locally or to run contrary to general promises the politician makes during election time.
That's not to say that most politicians aren't dishonest *******s, but it's much easier for the media and public to point at a single issue and go 'HA! You lied!' than it is to look at the broader context and maybe understand why someone has placed a vote in a particular way. The outcome tends to be that politicians often end up placing stupid votes because they know it's the only way to avoid their opponents and the media from wheeling it back out at the next election and using it out of context.
