If you like the concept of BE, but are annoyed by 1UPT, you really ought to try SMAC. It's on gog.com for cheap, and quite fun despite its limitations and age.

Had another go at SMAC a while ago, didn't enjoy it anymore. REX, the old units maintenance system, corruption, the workshop... I had fun playing a few games of SMAC a couple months ago. I can't get into it for long periods of time anymore, but revisit it every few years. (Only version of Civ I can do that with.)Comment
