My point is not that there are obvious, easy answers to these problems. But those kids, and a lot of others like them, are hosed, and there is nothing they can do about it.

When HC says he's a moron, he doesn't literally mean that he's unintelligent. He's not. In fact he's quite bright. He's just chicken****.Last edited by regexcellent; October 5, 2014, 16:24.

You will never ever hear either myself or Reg claim that all poor people are poor from their own fault, or that they deserve it. To be honest, I don't think even my cousin deserves what he gets, or more precisely, I don't *care* whether he "deserves" it. The point is that it was avoidable, and his fault.
And also, to be clear, I don't dislike my cousin either. I actually like him, and wish he would straighten his life out, but he's made his choices, and you can't help people who don't want help.
He's also not even that poor. From what I understand he has a place to live, enough to eat, and even some modest luxuries. He just doesn't have as much as most in the US. He probably does better than many much harder-working illegal immigrants. That's pretty unfair, don't you think? If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Threads like this just make me sad. The all-encompassing lack of empathy on display simply astounds me. I'm gonna go make a poor cal/$ decision now. Bye, folks.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.
