    2. I think an unfortunate consequence of at-will employment is unfair treatment of innocents accused of crimes. I don't think this is enough of a problem to justify changing employment rules, but it is worthy of consideration, and I might change my mind on this based on factual questions about how prevalent such a situation is.

EDIT: Being fired unfairly is also an unfortunate consequence of at will employment. However, companies have an incentive not to fire people unfairly. I don't think running businesses badly should be illegal. It would definitely be nice if all businesses are run well, but let's let the market decide what that means, not the government, right?

That isn't an argument that works terribly well in the professional world.

I have never cared how much money someone else makes. Particularly not when it comes to questions like "is this person guilty of a crime" or "is this person a good person".

I am aware. It is a flaw in the system, in my view. I don't have any proposal in mind to correct it, but suggesting that the public not scream for someone's head before they've had a chance to prove their innocence seems like a good start.

Yet you don't seem to have quite the same level of sympathy when the person isn't say a millionaire sports star.

it's the way it's going in the UK, and europe as well, all in the name of 'flexible labour markets'. guess who has to be 'flexible' and who reaps the benefits...

The NFL, the players, and most of the public disagree with you.

Wrong. But when's the last time someone here posted a thread about Joe Schmoe who got fired from the gas station for allegedly pickpocketing a customer?

                        Do you have a video?

Videos can easily be faked, for example the video of Rodney King being beaten

I'm not complaining about Rice being fired. I'm saying the NFL should have discretion in each case. They are now getting pressure to change their policy so that all accused are fired.

The NFL isn't punishing them for a crime; the NFL is punishing them for embarrassing the NFL.

If a video turned up of one of my employees punching a woman in the face or beating a kid, they'd be gone long before the legal system had their say.

They are company that is really concerned about its public image. It means that public opinion is important. Since the NFL totally screwed up when it had discretion, this is what it gets.
