Take a job (X) from a well-paid worker (A) and give it to a poorly paid worker (B). The output of the X becomes cheaper, and the purchasing power of A + B has decreased, even in regard to specific purchase of the output of X.

Wouldn't the purchasing power of Customers C to Z go up and more than offset the lost wages. Forgive me if I misunderstood the scope of the point you v reg were making. I don't think anyone thinks creative destruction isn't painful for those whose jobs are lost.

                  • The problem is when majority of your economy is transitioning so most of C-Z just went through the same scenario, in that case the system overall is at a loss, and this is pretty much what is going on a national level, however when you look at the world as a whole, we overall still benefit.

The issue though for western voters is that they care more about their depressed wages and not about the fact that millions if not billions of people in developing countries live a whole lot better than 10 years, not to mention 20 years ago.

                    • Reg, there was never any time during civilization where 100% of the population were involved in food production. The whole reason we ever even had civilization is that farmers produced so much there was a surplus and it was that surplus which was used to support specialist and go towards redistribution (I.E. taxes).

                      • I meant in that case before there was farming. Like when literally everyone was a hunter-gatherer. Even after intensive agriculture began, the vast majority of people were farmers until relatively recently.

                        • Relatively recently....as in 200 years.

                          • actually it really depended on the local circumstances. egypt in the middle ages was around 33% urbanised, owing to the nile region's exceptional fertility. yet in parts of northern europe at the same time urban life simply didn't exist.

                            • In any case, ever since less than 100% of the population was needed to look for food (and only because most of those who couldn't were left to die), there has been unemployment. Modern technologies haven't improved this.

                              • Actually, up to a couple hundred years ago, there was always the option to move on and settle somewhere new (it did grow more difficult as time went by). That option is pretty much not available any more.
